BLACK BEAUTY SNARE

This month’s loop, is a half-time groove based on a linear idea I came up with using inverted variations Double Strokes at 115 BPM

This groove is exciting as I’ve recorded it using my new Black Beauty snare copy by WorldMax, and new A Designs Pacifica preamps on the Overheads.

I’ve been into half-time grooves recently, and this is another example of that. Again, I’ve used space and not played lots of bass drums. And the sound of the snare; it’s musical, clear, snappy and articulate! This Black Beauty snare copy sounds like the real deal. I mean, a Ludwig black brass snare is really pricey, and finding a WorldMax version of it that sounds pretty much the same is awesome!

Jeff Porcaro, John Bonham, Bernard Purdie, Jason McGerr have great half-time shuffles which are very inspiring… This drum beat however, goes a bit the other way being a straight rather than swung groove.

ABOUT THIS FREE DRUM LOOP

This month’s loop, is a neat layered groove with some tambourine on the hi hats thrown in for good measure and texture at 85 BPM.

I wanted to come up with a groove that had a percussive element to it, but one not too obtrusive. I felt that the left and right hand interplay created great individual melodies.

Space, to me, even when I’m filling it with notes, is very important to be mindful of. You could say that groove is much as the notes themselves as what happens between them. For instance, I know Lars Ulrich gets a lot of flack for his drumming from the 90’s onwards, but I’m a huge fan of his playing post their classic ’88 album …And Justice For All. The grooves on their ’91 self-titled, and ‘96s Load are simple, and just smash with weight. Why? Because there’s space for the music to breathe.

And whilst this groove isn’t necessarily as simple as a straight ahead Rock groove, due to the details I’ve added, notice the backbeat is 2 & 4, and the bass drum’s just on beat 1. So yeah, you could say this groove has a bit of Ringo Starr and Lars Ulrich in it. Enjoy creating!

About this free drum beat

This groove is inspired by Led Zeppelin’s When The Levee Breaks drum beat. Of course, it’s got my own twist to it, with a big, wide open snare and a linear vibe to it. It was recorded in a massive empty, untreated office so the natural reverb makes the groove sound huge. I also really like how the hi hats give the groove a degree of elasticity.

I’ve called it Your Phatness coz it sounds it’s a big, big groove that you can use for lots of styles. I came up with whilst noodling between lessons. I got inspired, so decided to record it and offer it as one of my free drum beats online. So you can chop it up as you please and have fun with it. This groove is cool because you could use it to write tons of stuff. It’s feels great, so go make some music!

Sometimes a simple groove is all it takes to get creative juices flowing! You never know when you might need a groove to inspire creativity!

About this free crunchy half-time shuffle groove drum loop

This groovy crunchy half-time shuffle drum loop is 68 BPM and 1 bar long. It’s in the style of the classic Jeff Porcaro, Bernard Purdie and John Bonham grooves but with my own twist. What’s that twist? Well, having spent the last few months learning diving deep into Tower Of Power and learning David Garibaldi’s beats, the groove came out a bit more layered and nuanced. I like the unusual feel to it, and the compression, crunch and natural reverb make it sound massive! I’ve even transcribed it, if you’re interested in learning it.

I’ve called it Chaka Shoufflé coz it sounds like Chocolate Soufflé, and I came up with this half-time shuffle whilst noodling between lessons. I got inspired, so decided to record it and offer it as one of my free drums loops. So you can chop it up as you please and have fun with it. This groove is cool because you could use it to write  tons of stuff, be it Pop or Rock. It’s feels great, so go make some music!

Tracking this Limp Bizkit-style free drum loop

About this free Limp Bizkit-style groove drum loop

This groovy Limp Bizkit-style drum loop is a 100 BPM, 4 bar loop reminiscent of the band’s debut album Three Dollar Bill, Y’all released in 1997. That album is raw and full of energy and along with Korn’s 1994 debut, helped define a totally new and innovative sub-genre of Metal called Nu Metal! This new sub-genre mixed elements of Alternative, Heavy Metal, Hip Hop and Industrial music into one, which made for an explosive sound!

I was doing some practice, and just stumbled onto the groove. I got inspired, so decided to record it and offer it as one of my free drums loops. So you can chop it up as you please and have fun with it. This groove is cool because you could use it to pen a bouncy Rock tune, an old school Hip Hop beat, or an Industrial layered with electronic sounds. Either way, the 4 bar phrase makes for a great dynamic drum loop.

Sometimes a simple groove is all it takes to get creative juices flowing! You never know when you might need a groove to inspire creativity!

LATIN GROOVE

Recording this Latin groove plus a neat transcription of the beat!

About this free Latin groove drum loop

This bouncy Latin groove drum loop is at 128 BPM. The 2 bar loop, whilst not being strictly a specific style of Latin groove, it most definitely got that great rhythmic vibe! I was doing some practice, and in doing so I stumbled on it. I got inspired, so decided to record it and offer it as one of my free drums loops. So you can chop it up as you please and have fun with it.

Latin style grooves are fantastic because, by their very nature, are very groovy and make people want to move. All the different elements make for a rich, layered, drum beat without being too busy! My approach to playing is always to be tasteful.
